NOTES ON THE CITY
Thesis study

This study sought to combine physical depth with E.B. White’s essays on life in New York City, titled, Notes On the City. Physical frames, transparencies and cutout images of architectural and organic pieces were used to create a single image. This produced a stage that utilized physical depth, but was disconnected from its main narrative—the text. In addition, the content of White’s text limited the formal creation of these stages. I needed to strip away the content to study architecture and depth in a simpler way to understand it better. Breaking away from the content and meaning of a specific text would give me the freedom to go beyond the literal and to explore ideas at which I wouldn’t normally have arrived.
