DIMENSIONAL LETTERFORMS

Thesis study

Because previous studies with form and shape utilized only image, the text needed to be integrated if I was to consider how these studies would connect to book design. Building on previously techniques, a flat letterform was rendered three-dimensional in the computer. The dimensional planes were deconstructed into 2-D shapes, printed out and finally suspended in space. This treatment gave them the appearance of dimension and mass. This process moved from flat to dimensional … to flat to dimensional … and finally to flat (when the photograph “flattened” the scene). In a way, it felt as if I had started to liberate the text from its flat plane of the page by giving it the illusion of existing in space.
