THE FLAT GRID OF THE PAGE
Thesis study

I returned to ideas about the book and the page. The grid is the invisible structure that holds up the page’s contents. Created from a combination of horizontal and vertical lines, it is one of the flattest elements of the page. Constructing three-dimensional grids in the computer and applying text to them was a preliminary way to understand them. Constructing the text in a way that accurately portrayed type receding in space was the challenge. This proved to be difficult to resolve, and the results were not realistic. The flatness of the computer space didn’t help me understand type and depth.
