TEXT IN A DIMENSIONAL GRID

Thesis study

Viewing text in a three-dimensional grid revealed how depth and the z axis affect the read of the text in a page layout setting. The farther the text was from the viewer, the more difficult it was to read. Angled text receded and became distorted. The compositions that worked best were the ones that used depth but didn’t recede far back in z space. The farther back the text, the smaller the font appeared, in the same way buildings on the horizon appear tiny. Because the grid is invisible on the page, its visible presence became distracting from the type. Eventually it was removed completely and only type remained.
