TYPE ON SURFACES

Thesis study

I wondered how type would situate itself inside real environments on real surfaces. To find out, I projected text on walls. The type wrapped around these surfaces and became distorted in unpredictable ways. These exaggerations highlighted the perspective of the projection space. There was a point of distortion where text no longer was legible as it stretched across a surface. Combining type and multiple surfaces exaggerated this feeling. Although this technique was not completely legible for text in all situations, it would be possible to treat continuous text this way in some situations. Also, the distortion could become a metaphor for existing themes in the text.
