MODERN HERALDRY
paper sculpture, 4 feet x 6 feet
This three-dimensional typographic composition strives to create multiple layers of meaning through combining elements from other cultures and historical times. Coat of arms and ancient paper cutting techniques reference historical ideas of identity. In ancient times, shields and coats of arms (possibly the first logos) represented identity in the context of family or clan. This piece questions our contemporary identity within the two terms, “need” and “want.” A combination of hand and laser cut typography is used. Exaggerated scale is used to emphasize our culture's love of bigger and better.
